The Detroit Cobras are the garage band of your dreams

I'd sit down to explain, if only I could stop shaking my ass and daydreaming of muscle cars, tattooed bikini sluts in spit-curls and cake eyeliner, and smoke-and-whiskey-tinged women who belt out raw, loud and fast versions of 60's soul treasures. Mascorrolandia remains speechless but lucid enough to predict that the Detroit Cobras shall inherit the earth someday. Until that day comes, however, several of these introductory tracks should stand out nicely on your summer soundtrack.

Get your ass over to iTunes and download the following:

Breakaway
- Originally by Jackie De Shannon (thank you, Danny!), later covered by Irma Thomas, Tracey Ullmann, and now, the Detroit Cobras. The Tracey Ullmann version was the first one I heard. Rachel Nagy nails every line, and the band just kicks ass with a magical precision that's almost unheard of these days. Never gets old.

Cha-Cha Twist - Did this really appear in a Diet Coke commercial in Europe? That's cool - here's hoping the band's seeing some nice residuals, and saw a nice spike in record sales. Gotta pay the bills somehow!

My Baby Loves The Secret Agent - This seems like it would go great with some Blondie. Contact in Red Square, anyone?

Putty (In Your Hands) - The only other version I've ever heard of this was by the Yardbirds, another one of my all-time garage fave-raves. Wonder who did the original? The song itself is credited to a J. Patton and K. Rogers. I'm probably missing something totally obvious here, but I'll piss myself with glee if it's Kenny.

C'mon Over To My House - This turned up on the first of two Peel Sessions the band recorded. Bless. This tune's sassy, punchy, and perfect for getting your flirt on. Your potential paramours won't know what hit 'em.

For more Detroit Cobras delight, go here for Ken Tucker's review of the 2005 album 'Baby,' ace quotes and interviews with lead singer and current girl of my dreams Rachel Nagy, and all kinds of other fun shit. Their official website appears to be down, but Bloodshot's keeping it real for The People, and we couldn't be happier.
